August Burns Red
August Burns Red is a two time Grammy nominated metalcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They returned to New Zealand after 14 years as part of their Season of Surrender Tour and Paddybird design got the opportunity to do the Poster Illustration for their San Fran, Wellington Show. Built around the core theme of resilience central to the band's ethos, the design was produced as official limited-edition show posters.

Challenge
The main challenge was to commemorate a landmark performance marking August Burns Red's return to New Zealand after a 14-year hiatus. This illustration was expected to blend the band's recognizable visual identity with local Wellington iconography without diluting their aggressive, high-energy aesthetic. This should happen while also visually translating the theme of resilience into a unified artwork suitable for both fine-art poster prints and wearable merchandise.
Strategy
I anchored the narrative around resilience by pairing local wildlife - new zealand sea lions, sea gull, and the iconic yellow WRIBO buoy - against a backdrop of the wellington harbour. Prior to the process, I studied ABR’s previous album artworks created by Invisible Creature studios to ensure the illustration felt consistent with their older illustrations.
Application
The final output was a highly detailed digital artwork and was created to be used for on-screen and print purposes. The band was consulted throughout the process to know whether the visual elements are consistent with their overall visual identity. They were also presented with merchandise designs which were optimized for screen printing across official tour t-shirts and hoodies.
Outcome
I was able to deliver limited edition poster prints that fit the visual identity for one of the most iconic bands in the metalcore scene. This poster served as a cherished piece of memorabilia that resonated strongly with both local attendees and the band's international team. Undoubtedly my favorite project to work on.
